Getting to Konopiště from Prague
The train to Benešov, the walk or bus from the station, and what driving actually involves.
Konopiště is one of the easiest chateaux to reach from Prague without a car, which is a large part of why it is such a popular day trip. The journey is a train to Benešov and then a short hop to the estate — but the last two kilometres are the part people underestimate, so it is worth knowing your options before you arrive.
By train to Benešov u Prahy
Trains run from Prague to Benešov u Prahy and the journey takes roughly an hour. This is a normal domestic service rather than a tourist shuttle, so it runs frequently through the day and does not need booking ahead.
Benešov is the town, not the chateau. From the station you still have about two kilometres to cover to reach Konopiště itself.
From Benešov station to the chateau
The walk from the station takes roughly half an hour on a signposted route and is pleasant in good weather, ending with the climb up through the park. It is the option most independent visitors take.
There is also a local bus and taxis at the station. If you are travelling with children, with anyone who tires on hills, or in poor weather, the bus or a taxi is the sensible call — the final approach is uphill, and arriving late for a timed departure means missing it.
Driving and parking
By car Konopiště is a straightforward run south from Prague on the D1 and takes about an hour depending on traffic leaving the city. There is paid parking at the estate.
The car park sits below the chateau, so even drivers finish the journey on foot and uphill. Allow more time than the distance suggests, particularly on summer weekends when the car park fills.
From the airport
From Václav Havel Airport you are looking at a transfer into Prague and then the train from there, or a direct taxi or private transfer. There is no useful direct public route from the airport to Benešov.
If you are going straight from a flight, build in a generous margin. A timed guided departure is unforgiving of a delayed arrival.
How long to allow
Budget roughly an hour and a half each way door to door from central Prague if you are using the train and walking the last leg, and rather less if you take the bus or a taxi from Benešov.
Add the tour itself, plus time in the park and the rose garden, and Konopiště is a comfortable half-day trip that most visitors stretch into a full one.
Arriving in time for your departure
Because entry is by timed guided tour, the schedule works backwards from your departure rather than forwards from your arrival. Aim to be at the chateau at least twenty minutes before the time on your ticket, and treat the walk up from the station or car park as part of the journey, not a bonus.
